Incident Details

Maximum — exactly determined

My pull start return was not functioning 100% perfectly. Before take off, I felt the pull start return slowly return & thought it was completely returned. After 5 minutes of flight, I went to higher RPM & the pull start cable was caught in the belt & resulted in both the belt & pull start cable breaking. I immediately felt the loss of thrust & abnormal sharp high pitch motor noise. This resulted in a complete loss of thrust. I killed the motor & landed without incident.

Pull start mechanism not functioning properly, could have been prevented by better cleaning or replacement of the pull start mechanism. Pilot error in not ensuring pull start was completely returned before flight.
